Below is an email from a passionate customer of ours. Ian has been using our Gel ice bricks for several years and gets up to 8 days use from these.

Your bricks are still working well

I am slowly developing a theory about the gel ice bricks life from our trips

In broad terms it is as follows

Precool and pack the same way with cooled general food for camping for each trip

Never put the box in the sun

Aim for up to 5 degrees in the upper box

Always cover the bottom of the box with bricks first, the rest around the walls and gaps

40% bricks 7 to 8 days

30% bricks 5 to 6 days

20% bricks 3 to 4 days

The reason for the different percentages was to allow for different size boxes  to have suffuciient space

40% of a smaller box wouldn't leave much space plus many trips are less than 4 days anyway so you may as well maximise utility as best you can and improve convenience with an easy to use smaller box

The 40 and 30% were older 65 and 47 L Evakools that I have

I don't have a quality mid size box and I couldn't get hold of one of yours but I managed to get hold of a 31 L Competitor Brand for the 20% theory test

Other mid sized boxes may be different I don't know

It's not a like for like test but the best I could do

One thing I noticed was that even when the 5 degrees was passed in the upper part of the box the bricks in the bottom were still pretty much frozen so drinks or other things which were close to the bottom were still very cold so this would increase the usable days if there wasn't much meat etc left in the box

All the above numbers are not exact but close approximations based on actual usage for general food

I use frozen bottles to supplement the bricks and fill smaller spaces

Differentt weather could also cause variations of course
